SEATTLE (Oct. 10) - Sarah Martinez' second half goal made her Seattle Pacific University's all-time career leader in points and kept No. 2 SPU's perfect record intact, as the Falcons beat Western Oregon 1-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Interbay Stadium.
Falcons continued their best start in program history, improving to 14-0-0 overall and 8-0 in GNAC play. The loss drops the Wolves to 2-11-2 for the season.
Martinez' goal was her 15th on the season, and brought her to a school and GNAC record 113 points, two more than previous record holder Shannon Lovejoy (2001-'05).
The senior forward took a feed from Shannon Oakes in the 52nd minute, cut back, and slotted the ball past WOU keeper Kelsie Blachly to the left post.
Martinez was denied a second strike with 28 minutes remaining when she ran onto a thru-ball from Jocelyn Charette and sent a bending ball off the right post.
Seattle Pacific out-shot the Wolves 25-2 and earned a 10-0 advantage on corner-kicks. Blachly was busy in goal, recording eight saves. Falcon keeper Jesslyn Rahm was not seriously threatened.
The Falcons host Saint Martin's at Interbay on Saturday night (Oct. 13). Kick-off is scheduled for 7PM.
